A drill pipe is a steel pipe with a thread at the tail, which is used to connect the surface equipment of the rig with the drilling or grinding equipment or bottom hole device at the bottom of the drilling rig. The purpose of the drill pipe is to transport drilling mud to the drill bit, and raise, lower or rotate the bottom hole device with the drill bit.

The purpose of the drill pipe is to transport drilling mud to the drill bit, and raise, lower or rotate the bottom hole device with the drill bit. The drill pipe must be able to withstand huge internal and external pressures, twists, bends, and vibrations. During oil and gas extraction and refining, drill pipes can be used multiple times. The drill pipe is divided into three types: square drill pipe, drill pipe and weighted drill pipe. The connection order is square drill pipe (1) + drill pipe (n, determined by the depth of the well) + weighted drill pipe (n, determined by the combination of drilling tools). The classification of drill pipe, drill pipe joints, drill pipe specifications, and steel grade and strength of drill pipe are introduced in detail.

Light pipes and raw steel pipes are made into drill rods after several processing steps. First, through the thickening process of the steel pipe, the outer surface of the light pipe is bent inward, and the wall of the steel pipe is thickened. The next step is to thread and plate copper for increased strength. Non-destructive quality control inspections are then performed, followed by welding of steel pipe body joints. Then, the pipe body undergoes welding heat treatment and welding final treatment to eliminate welding residual stress. Before the finished drill pipe is painted and packaged, other tests are performed on the finished steel pipe, including hardness testing, pressure testing and non-destructive testing.

The length of the drill pipe is generally around nine meters.
